What is Microneedling?

A

A cosmetic procedure that uses a device covered with tiny shallow needles, which cause micro-injury that prompts that skin to stimulate collagen production.

Treatment protocol

A
  • do a cleanse
  • numb the area being treated with numbing cream and let it sit for 30 mins( if it’s the stomach use Saran Wrap on that area to prevent the cream from touching any clothing)
  • wipe numbing cream off, perform double cleanse then proceed to alcohol swab
  • adjust the setting depth according to area being treated
    -for face divide 5 parts( forehead, left& right cheeks, nose, upper lip & chin)
  • apply hyaluronic acid to the area being treated
  • with your free hand, hold the skin taught with a gauze for a smoother application
    -use short strokes like a brush, lifting the tip of the needle between each stroke
  • make 3 passes ( vertical, horizontal & small circles) may use stamping technique when targeting certain areas such as fines lines, acne scarring etc.
    -wipe away any bleeding
  • after treating the entire area, apply additional layer of hyaluronic acid

Pre treatment tips

A
  • must be off of photosensitizing medications ( accutane& blood thinners for 6 months- 1 year
  • do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids,exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to you treatment
  • do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil for atleast 3 days
  • avoid IPL/ lasers and any sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
    -no waxing, depilatory creams or electrolysis for 5-7 days
    -do not shave the day of the treatment, shave day before
    -if prone to cold sores take an antiviral agent 3 days prior to and the day of the treatment

Aftercare

A

-No anti inflammatory medications for one week
-do not use ice on the face, avoid arnica/ bromelain
- avoid suntanning & direct exposure from the sun for atleast 2 weeks, after 24 hours always use sunblock 30 SPF or higher and wear a hat if your outside
- use painkiller Tylenol if sore

Mild irritation & redness
Serious side effects are bleeding, bruising, peeling & infection

A
  • scar easily
    -pregnant
    -have open wounds
  • recently had radiation therapy
  • take blood tinners
    -have skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
  • have a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia or Von Willebrand disease

Three phases of wound repair process triggered by microneedling

A

phase 1- inflammation- piercing the skin triggers immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood glue & begin to create new tissue

Phase 2- Proliferation- wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells

Phase 3-Remodelling- wound is replaced with new dermal tissues & blood vessels
