microbiology ch 12 ( lactobacilli, cornybacteria, and propionibacteria) Flashcards
Lactobacilli
love low ph ( aciduric), oral cavity and human vagina, alpha or non haemolytic, ferment carbohydrates to make acid, grow at ph 6,
2 main groups of lactobacilli
homofermentors- produce lactiv acid
heterofermentors- produce lactic acid, acetate, ethanol and CO2
Corynebacteria diptheria
human throat, nose, sometimes skin, cell wall contains mycolic acid, Divide via snapping fission,
corynebacteria diptheria’s tox gene
subunit A- adenosine diphosphate ribosylating function
subunit B- binds toxin to cell surface receptors
c. diptherias toxins
exotoxin which results in grey psuedomembrane that may obstruct airway. It affects motor nerves of myocardium and nervous system
what converts the toxin to a toxoid?
formaldehyde , a toxoid is non toxic but still antigentic
what test is ran to see if the diptheria has the exotoxin?
elek plate test
propionibacteria
is a diptheroid ( like diptheria)
