Microbiology Flashcards
What are the four major groups of human pathogens?
Protozoa, fungi, bacteria and viruses
What are Protozoa?
Single called animals, they are eukaryotes
What are fungi?
Higher plant like organisms, they are eukaryotes
What are viruses?
Generally small, single celled prokaryotes
How can energy be made in the absence of a mitochondria?
The cell membrane can produce energy via the electron transport chain
What does the nucleoid contain?
DNA and proteins
General structure of the cell wall?
Repeated polysaccharide structure
Structure of gram positive bacteria
They have cell walls composed of thick layers of peptidoglycan
What colour do gram positive cells stain when subjected to a gram stain procedure?
Purple
What are the targets for penicillin?
Peptidoglycan cross links
Structure of gram negative bacteria
They have cell walls with a thin layer of peptidoglycan
Difference with a gram -ve compared to a positive
It has an outer membrane, a periplasm and a thinner PG layer
What is the very outer membrane of gram negative bacteria?
Lipopolysaccharide
What do fimbrae allow?
Increased surface area contact and specificity to different tissue. It can mediate the transfer of material (bacterial sex)
What can bacterial secretion systems secrete?
DNA, RNA and protein into cells
