Microbiology 1 - Hospital acquired infection Flashcards
What type of bacteria is vancomycin effective against?
Gram pos
What is the pathognemonic endoscope finding for C diff infection?
Columns of inflammatory exudate in colon lining
How should C diff infection be managed?
- Stop antibiotics
- Fluid + electrolyte resuscitation for patients with diarrhoea
- ORAL vancomycin/ metronidazole to combat C. diff
Other options (but are VERY ££££££) are fidaxomicin or bezlotoxumab OR faecal transfer
What are the most common causative pathogens in HAP?
S aureus
Klebsiella
Pseudomonas
Haemophilus
Which 3 antibiotics can predispose you to C diff infection?
Cephalosporin
Clindamycin
Ciprofloxacin
Definition of HAI
Infection acquired >48 hours after entering hospital
What if the most common disease caused by an HAI?
Hospital acquired pneumonia
What HAIs can MRSA cause?
- catheter associated UTI
- catheter associated blood stream infection
- surgical site infection
What HAI can cephalosporins cause?
Antiiotic associated diarrhoea
What HAI can be caused by E. Coli?
Ventilator associated pneuomnia
Catheter associated UTI
What HAIs can MSSA cause?
- catheter associated BSI
- surgical site infection
What HAIs can gram negatives cause?
Catheter asosictaed BSI
Surgical site infections
What HAIs can yeasts cause?
Catheter associated BSI and catheter associated UTI
What is negative and positive pressure isolation?
Positive pressure isolation: pressure inside the room is greater than the outside hence air can only flow outside eg during surgery
Negative pressure isolation: pressure is less inside than outside so air can only come inside; eg to prevent other peopel from getting infected by a patient in particular room
Causes of community acquired UTIs
- E Coli
- coagulase negative staph eg staph saprophyticus
- proteus mirabalis
