Microbiology 1 Flashcards
What is fungi cell wall made out of?
Chitin and glucan
How does penicillin work?
Penicillium produced from mould
Penicillin creates holes in bacterial cell wall making the insides leak out.
What holds bacteria together?
Peptidoglycan (crosslinked disaccharides)
Gram positive: P purple (thick peptidoglycan)
Gram negative: pink or red (thin peptidoglycan covered by an outer membrane that contains lipopolysaccharides LPS which is an endotoxin)
Four phases bacterial growth
Lag
Exponential
Stationary
Decline
Haemagglutinins
Antigenic glycoproteins on virus surface
Binds the virus to the host cell
18 different types (h1, H2 etc)
Which cell it will affect and how easily it does so
Neurominidase
Enzymes on viral surface
Acts on infected cell surface to release viral progeny
Determines how quickly it will spread
