Q
What are the 5 types of pathogens?
A
- Viruses - not cells in their own right
- Bacteria - Prokaryotes
- Fungi - Single cell eukaryotes
- Protozoa - single cell eukaryotes
- Helminths - multi-cellular eukaryotes

Q
What are the characteristics of viruses?
A
- Contain DNA or RNA
- Use host-cell’s nuclear synthetic machinery
- Divide by budding out of host cell or cytolysis
- Can infect by faecal-oral path, airborne, insect vectors or blood borne

Q
What are the characteristics of bacteria?
A
- Have no internal membranes
- Have a single copy of a chromosome (haploid)
- Cytoskeleton is poorly defined
- Cell wall contains peptidoglycan
- Divide by binary fission

Q
What is a nosocomial infection?
A
A hospital-acquired infection
