Micro of Endocrine Glands - adrenal (suprarenal glands) Flashcards
1
Q
Gross anatomy of adrenal glands
A
- Next to kidneys
- Capsule - can’t be peeled off
- Cortex - outer
- Medulla - inner
2
Q
Embryology of adrenal gland
A
- Cortex - derived from intermediate mesoderm
- Medulla - derived from neural crest cells (ectoderm)
3
Q
Capsule of adrenal gland is made of…
A
Dense irregular connective tissue
4
Q
Cortex contains three zones:
A
- Zona glomerulosa (=arcuata)
- Zona fasciculata
- Zona reticularis
5
Q
Zona glomerulosa (=arcuata)
A
- Cells exist in clusters that resemble glomeruli (glomerulosa), or in arches (arcuata)
- Ultrastructure of steroid secreting cell - a lot of smooth ER
- Mitochodnria with tubular cristae
6
Q
Zona fasciculata
A
- Cords of cells
- Cells contain lipid droplets
- Ultrastructure of steroid secreting cell - a lot of smooth ER
7
Q
Zona reticularis
A
- Network of cells
- Rows of cells from zona fasciculata break up as you get closer to medulla and get irregular
- Similar to cells of zona fasciculata
8
Q
Anatomy of medulla of adrenal gland
A
- Innervated only by sympathetic preganglionic neurons (modified sympathetic glangion) because the cells of the medulla, that arised from neural crest ectoderm are essentially modified sympathetic postganglionic neurons
- Cells sometiems called chromaffin cells because they have affinity for chromium salts (brown color)
- Two cell types: epinephrine cells and norepinephrine cells
9
Q
Function of cortex
A
- Zona glomerulosa (arcuata) - produces mineralocorticoids (aldosterone)
- Zona fasciculata - produces glucocorticoids (cortisol)
- Zona reticularis - produces androgens in both males and females
10
Q
Function of medulla
A
Epinephrine and norepinephrine secretion stimulated by acetylcholine from sympathetic preganglionic neurons
