Introduction to Endocrine Glands Flashcards
1
Q
Components of the endocrine gland system of the body
A
- Pituitary gland (and hypothalamus)
- Thyroid gland
- Parathyroid glands
- Adrenal glands
- Pineal gland
- Pancreatic islets
2
Q
Endocrine glands - definition
A
- Internal secreting = endocrine
- Ductless glands
3 Secrete directly into ECF (interstitial fluid, blood or lymph) - Products usually called hormones (or factors)
- Hormones act on target organs
3
Q
Endocrine glands - definition
A
- Work with nervous system to coordinate activities of various tissues (influenced directly by nervous system)
- Ex: Hypothalamus –> pituitary –> adrenal cortex
4
Q
Endocrine glands of the body can all together be called what system because of their close functional relationship with the nervous system?
A
Neuroendocrine system
5
Q
Endocrine Glands - general structure
A
- Parenchymal cells predominate (epithelial derived)
- Sparse stroma of reticular fibers
- Extensive blood supply + lymph drainage
6
Q
Thymus produces….
A
- Thymosin + thymopoietin - glycoproteins that influence T cell deveopment within the thymus and enhance T cell function when T cells enter secondary lymphatic organs
7
Q
Kidney produces….
A
- Erythropoietin - stimulates conversion of precursors to RBC line
- Renin - catalyzes angiotensinin –> angiotensin I
8
Q
GI tract produces…
A
gastrin, CCK, etc
9
Q
Ovary produces
A
Estrogen and porgesterone, necessary for normal productive behavior
10
Q
Testis produce
A
Testosterone - responsible for all male sexual characteristics
11
Q
Heart produces ….
A
atrial natriuretic factor - allows sodium loss via kidney
