Micro Agars/Broths Flashcards
Which type of media will grow most nonfastidious organisms? Examples include trypticase soy broth and nutrient agar (lecture 1)
Nutrient media
Which type of media is supplemented with various substances (blood, blood by-products, vitamins, yeast extract, carbohydrates, etc.) and will grow fastidious organisms which have special nutritional requirements? Examples include Sheep blood agar plate and Chocolate agar. (lecture 1)
Enriched media
Which media type enhances the growth of certain microorganisms while inhibiting other organisms? Examples include Gram-Negative broth and Selenite broth (lecture 1)
Enrichment broths
This type of media contains antimicrobial substances such as dyes, antibiotics, and chemicals. It will inhibit some microbes while allowing the growth of others. Examples include PEA agar and CNA agar. (lecture 1)
Selective media
Media containing no antimicrobial substances and allows growth of many organisms. Examples: BAP and CHOC
Nonselective media
Media that aids in the identification of microorganisms by showcasing metabolic differences. Examples: carbohydrate fermentation media and enteric media
Differential media
Agar: Polysaccharide melts at what temperature?
100C
Agar: polysaccharide will stay liquid until what temperatures?
45-50C
What media:
-selective & differential
-high salt concentration (7.5%)
-if the carbohydrate is fermented, acid is produced, causing agar to turn yellow from pH indicator phenol red
-assists in identification of S. aureus
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)
Phenylethyl alcohol agar (PEA) and Colistin/Nalidixic acid agar (CNA) are used for GN or GP organisms?
Gram-positive
