what is power
Definition: the ability to bring about change or to do something
- Can be “given” by a group who perceive an individual/group to hold qualities/knowledge/attributes that deem them to be a suitable leader.
OR
- Individual/group enacts their power through utilising resources to bring about change.
definition of power bases
Describes the origin (base) of power. (where the power is derived from). Influenced by the position, area, groups or individuals that enable power to be attained
what is the impact of power bases
impacts on group dynamics, in that the leader is able to exert influence in accordance with their own capabilities and strengths
what are the different power bases (LERCR)
Legitimate
Expert
Reward
Coercive
Referent
Legitimate (LERCR)
A legitimate power base comes with a designated person usually agreed or voted on by the community members or governing body
EXAMPLE: school prefect, governing body
Expert (LERCR)
comes from the knowledge or expertise of an individual in a given feild. Group members may look up to the leader for guidance because they hold the leaders knowledge in high regard
Example: doctors have expertise in health
Reward (LERCR)
The leader is able to give merit/an award
Example: teacher who gives gold stars for good work
coercive (LERCR)
Is derived from the ability of a leader to give or take away privileges or rights and so influence group behaviour. This power can be used in a positive or negative way
EXAMPLE: parents can threaten to ground children if they misbehave
Referent (LERCR)
This comes from the followers of an individuals looks or attributes. such power often encourages followers to strive to look like or copy the leader.
EXAMPLE: people may follow influencers and try to act like them due to their influence
define leadership
A person who has both a direct and indirect effect on the group
define self leadership
developed a sense of who they are, what they value and a clear vision of their goals. Uses this to lead others.

what is self awareness
Knowing intentions and values
Example: a workplace abiding by values eg customer service employee has to show the workplaces values
what is self confidence
knowing strengths and abilities
Take actions and develops skills to become confident
Example: someone with a high self confidence in a sport group will encourage the team
what is self efficiency
belief that whatever comes your way you can handle it
Example: study group is motivated to handle any school problems they have.
