Mettalic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is metallic bonding?
A
Metallic bonding occurs within a metal.
2
Q
What happens during metallic bonding?
A
Metals lose their outer most electrons in order to gain a full outer shell. The positive ions that are formed are attracted to the negative delocalised electrons. The structure formed is a giant metallic lattice.
3
Q
Why do metals conduct electricity?
A
Delocalised electrons are free to move and carry a charge, therefore allowing metals to conduct electricity.
4
Q
Why are metals malleable and ductile?
A
The ions are arranged in layer, and therefore can slide over each other. The electrons are delocalised, meaning the metallic bond still exists.
