Atoms Flashcards
Where is the number on top of the element?
The mass number (number of protons + neutrons) .
What is the number on the bottom of the element?
Atomic number ( number of protons and electrons ).
What is relative atomic mass?
The average mass of an element taking into account the existence of all of its isotopes.
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass?
You multiply the percentage of each isotope by its mass number ,you then add them together and then divided by the total percentage, which is 100.
What is an isotope?
An isotope is an atom of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons.
The chemical properties of isotopes
The chemical properties of different isotopes stay the same as atoms have the same electronic structure.
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest part of any substance.
What is a molecule?
A molecule contains two or more atoms joined together that are either the same or different.
What is a compound?
A compound is more than one type of atom join together chemically bonded.
What is an element?
An element contains one type of atom only.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a material that contains more than one type of substance.
What is an ionic compound?
When a non-metal is bonded with a metal.
What is a covalent compound?
When two or more non-metals are bonded.
What happens to metal atoms during a reaction?
Metal atoms lose electrons during a reaction and will always be positively charged.
What happens to nonmetals during a reaction?
Nonmetals gain electrons during a reaction and will always be negatively charged.
