Methods - Sampling Flashcards
What is random sampling?
every person has an equal chance of being selected
What is systematic sampling?
every 5th or 10th person is selected
What is stratified sampling?
dividing the sampling frame into subcategories and then selecting members from these in the proportion they occur in the target population
What is quota sampling?
researchers select people who fit into certain categories according to their proportion in the target pop, the choice of selection is left to the researcher
What is cluster sampling?
selecting a series of places then a random sample from each of the places
What is snowball sampling?
used when a sample is difficult to obtain, researcher makes contact with one person who then suggests another and so on
What are the advantages of random sampling?
it is Unbiased
What are the disadvantages of random sampling?
Can be impractical or expensive, and may not be representative
What are the advantages of systematic sampling?
Practical and convenient, usually representative
What are the disadvantages of systematic sampling?
Can give biased results if there’s a repeated pattern
What are the advantages of stratified sampling?
It is Representative
What are the disadvantages of stratified sampling?
Requires prior information, complicated
What are the advantages of quota sampling?
Convenient, practical, could be representative
What are the disadvantages of quota sampling?
Potential bias
What are the advantages of cluster sampling?
Practical, less bias and can be representative
