Marxism - Education Flashcards

Bourdieu argues education keeps society unequal by justifying class inequality. Each social class has its own culture but the ruling class impose their culture on students, middle and upper class have more access to the dominant culture and this is a fake meritocracy
What is Bowles and Gintis’ views on education?
Bowles and Gintis state the hidden curriculum teaches lessons and traits in school that also apply in the capitalist workplace, this is called the correspondence principle as school rewards the kind of traits that make a skilled obedient workforce.
What is Willis (neo marxist)’s views on education?
Willis argued schools are not making obedient workforces, he found a group of working class boys in an anti school subculture and rejected meritocratic ideas. He suggests they purposefully did bad in schools and resisted the schools ideology, thereby guaranteeing themselves unskilled jobs
