Why is Language an external factor?
may not speak english as first language, issues communicating and most exams are in english. 1/9 schools have most students with english not as first language
Why is material deprivation an external factor?
2/5 ethnic minorites are low income households, low income housing, hidden cost of education, diet and health, catchement area
Why is ethnic subculture an external factor?
can also form subcultures out of school, more likely to live with extended family, asians have supportive family and their subcultures reflect school ideals.
New right say high rates of fatherless families in different ethnicites is a reason for underachievement
Why is Racism in wider society and external factor?
Wood sent 3 types of application to around 1000 jobs and white people were accepted more.
black people more likely to be stopped and searched by police and given longer sentences
Racism worsens the effects of poverty and all this can lead to self fulfilling prophecies
