The media- newspapers
A
- Daily instructions were sent to them telling them what to put in.
- anti-nazi newspapers were shut down
- Jews were banned for owning or working fro newspapers.

A
- Goebbels took control of all the radio broadcasting
- Radio programmes included- Speeches. German music and history
- They sold cheap radios so in 1939 70% had a radio.

A
- Before films there was always a newsreel film which was shown- made by Goebbels team.
- Pro Nazi films were made on Goebbels order, showing the strengths of Nazis and Hitler, and the weaknesses of their opponents.
- There were also anti-jew films

- All new books were censored by Goebbel’s ministry
- This meant they were preventing German’s from thinking beyond the Nazi message.
- Books by communists, Jews, socialists, anyone they disapproved or containing ideas they disapproved of were burnt.

- Goebbels stage managed rallies to give the impression of overwhelming power and unity.
- A large stadium was specially built at Nuremberg for rallies.

Propoganda

- The Nazis encouraged people to hate the Treaty of Versailles.
- Nazi propaganda said Jews and communists were the biggest cause of Germany’s problems.
- Nazi propaganda was used to unite the German people and make them believe the Nazis would make Germany strong.
- It took simple ideas and repeated them constantly
- Many German people were easier to persuade because the Depression had left them in poverty and the Nazis had promised to help them.

- The secret state police
- they arrested people without trial, tortured and imprisoned them.
- They could tap phones, open mail and collect a lot of info from their network of informers.

- They could arrest people without trial
- They could search houses
- All their recruits had to be recognisably Aryan.
- SS stands for Schutzstaffel- the protection squad

A
- When the Nazis came to power the SS arrested many Nazi opponents and put them in temporary prisons.
- They became forced labour camps.
- Held Jews, communists, socialists, trade unionists, church leaders.

Control by terror- Informers
A
- All towns were divided into smalll unions called blocks, A Nazi visited every name in the block every week
- They then wrote a report on each family which could determine if you got a job or not.
- People were encouraged to report disloyalty
