- Many people believed disease was a punishment from god for their sins.
- They thought that they could cure disease through prayer and repentance.
- Disease was also thought to be caused by supernatural beings. Many people thought witches caused outbreaks.
- Many people believed disease was caused by evil spirits within someone. Members of the church performed exorcisms to remove the spirits.

- The Roman Catholic Church as extremely powerful and influential in medieval Europe.
- The church encouraged people to think of disease as being a punishment from god rather than of natural cause. This meant people didn’t look to find new cures and causes.
- The church made sure that scholars of medicine learnt from the teachings of Galen as his theories fit the idea that God created human bodies perfect. The church also stopped anyone from disagreeing with him.
- The church outlawed dissection. This stopped doctors making any new discoveries about human anatomy and had to rely on Galen’s incorrect theories.
