Methods for Credibility Flashcards
Triangulation
Refers to a combination of different approaches to collect and interpret data
Method Triangulation
If the same results are obtained using various methods, credibility increases
Data Triangulation
Using data from a variety of sources. If a participant refers to a document, that one could be studied
Researcher Triangulation
Combining the observations or interpretations of 2 researchers
Theory Triangulation
Refers to using multiple perspectives or theories to interpret data
Establishing Rapport
Rapport is a close relationship in which people and groups understand each other’s feelings.
A good relationship should be established between researchers and participants so that answers are honest
Iterative Questioning
Researchers should ask the same question, with different phrases or using synonyms several times to ensure honest answers.
Credibility Checks
Participants should check the researcher’s notes to ensure that they portray what they meant, avoiding misunderstandings and correcting inaccuracies
Thick Descriptions
Refers to explaining both the observed behavior but also its context. Placing descriptions in context or giving explanations can be helpful.
Reflexivity
- Researchers should reflect on the possibility that their own biases might have interfered with observations or interpretations
- They should try to identify the findings that might have been affected by these biases and how
Epistemological Reflexivity
- Linked to the method in which information was gathered
- In an observation, participants could change their behavior because they know they were being observed
Personal Reflexivity
- Linked to the beliefs and expectations of the researcher
- If a researcher gives lots of emphasis to something someone said just because it is important to the subject
- Need to be aware of this to avoid it
