What is Hajj?
- The 5th pillar of Islam
- Performed during a fixed time of the 12th month - Dhul al-hajj
What did the Quran say about those who have the means to go on Hajj?
The Quran states: “Pilgrimage thereto is a duty people owe to Allah - those who can afford the journey.”
What are the 3 kinds of Hajj?
- Qiran (Combining both Umrah and Hajj)
- Tamatt’u (Combining both Umrah and Hajj with a break in between)
- Ifrad (Hajj only)
What do pilgrims do upon their arrival in Makkah?
- Pilgrims arrive by the 7th day of Dhul al-hajj, they purify themselves and on the 8th the men put on the ihram.
- It is the preparation to purify themselves at prescribed ihram stations, Meeqat, by shedding normal clothes and putting on unstaged cloths, one around the waist and one over the shoulder.
- Women do not wear these cloths but simple modest cloths to cover their bodies, except for their faces and hands.
After entering the state of purification, what do the pilgrims do?
- After entering the state of Ihram, the pilgrims start reciting Talbiya.
What do pilgrims do at the great mosque of the Kaaba (Masjid Al-haraam)?
- At the great mosque of the Kaaba (Masjid Al-haraam) they perform the Tawaaf Qudoom(the first tawaaf) where the pilgrims go around the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise manner 7 times.
What do the pilgrims do after going around the Kaaba?
- They proceed to the plain of Mina, where they pray their shortened prayers(not combined) for Zuhr, Asr, and Isha.
- Maghrib’s rakaats stay the same.
- Pilgrims spend all their precious free time in supplication and pray all night at Mina.
What do the pilgrims do after the 9th day after Fajr and what does the prophet say?
- On the 9th after fajr, they leave Mina for Arafat where they recite the Quran and pray at the Jabal al-Rahma. This is known as wuquf (reciting appropriate passages from the Quran).
- The prophet said, “Hajj is staying at Arafat”
- Zuhr and Asr prayers of the 9th of Dhul al-Hajja are performed together in this plain. The Hajj sermon is also delivered here.
What do the pilgrims do at sunset?
- At sunset, the pilgrims leave Arafat for Muzdalifa.
- They spend the night in worship and gather 49 pebbles for the next day.
What do the pilgrims do at the dawn of the 10th dhul al-hajja?
- At the dawn of the 10th of Dhu al-hajja also known as Yawm-an-Nahr which means the day of sacrifice.
- The pilgrims then proceed from Muzdaifa to Mina where they perform Ramy(stoning), by throwing seven pebbles at the Jamarat Al-Aqba.

Where is the animal sacrifice offered and what does the Quran say?
- The animal sacrifice is offered at Mina
- “The sacrificial camels, We have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is much good for you. Then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they are lined up for sacrifice. When they are down on their sides after slaughter, eat from them and feed others”
After Mina, what and where do the pilgrims do their obligatory tawaaf?
- After this, the pilgrims go to the Kaaba to perform the obligatory tawaf known as Tawaf Ifazah/Ziara. Then they perform two rakat near the station of Ibrahim.
- Then they carry out the Sa’yi between the hills of Safa and Marwa by running between the two 7 times. The Quran states: “Behold! Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So if those who visit the house in the season or at other times, should compass them round.”
When is Ramy (stoning) carried out?
- Ramy is carried out on the 11th and 12th days.
- On the 12th pilgrims return to the Kaaba for the final Tawaaf (wida)
