Metals Flashcards
What is corrosion?
when oxygen and water react with metal and gives us another way of describing oxidation and reduction
What is special about this equation?:
Ca(s) + Cl2(g) —-> CaCl2(s)
- The chlorine has been reduced by the calcium, therefore the calcium is a reducing agent
- The calcium has been oxidised by the chlorine, therefore the chlorine is the oxidising agent.
- a reaction that uses both reduction and oxidation is called a radox reaction
what is a radox reaction?
a reaction that uses both reduction and oxidation
where are metals found?
in rocks
what is an alloy?
There are when different metals are bonded together - this stops them from being able to slide
name some characteristics for copper
- electrical wires
- malleable
- conducts electricity
- ductile
name some characteristics for aluminium
- aeroplanes
- low density
- malleable
name some characteristics for iron (steel)
- car panels
- strong
- malleable
- cheap
what is the perfect condition for rusting?
water and oxygen
paint is a ……. method
barrier - protective coating
galvanising is a ……. method
reactivity - water will react with he zinc coating not the iron underneath
sacrificial protection is a ……. method
reactivity - more reactive metal fixed to the one you want to protect.
