Metallic Bonding Flashcards
what does this bonding occur between?
when one metal atom tries to bond with another metal ion
what do metals want to happen with their electrons?
lose electrons to have a full outer shell
what do we can losing electrons?
oxidation
what happens when metal ions bond?
They place their electrons into a sea of delocalised electrons. This means that the metal atoms become metal ions and have a positive charge. Therefore they are attracted to the negative charge of the sea of delocalised electrons and this holds the entire structure together in a regular pattern due to the strong electrostatic attraction. We call this metallic bonding.
what happens the more electrons a metal loses?
The more electrons there are in the sea of delocalised electrons. This creates a strong electrostatic force, that requires more energy in order to break the bonds. Therefore the higher the charge of the metal ion, the higher the melting and boiling points become.
why can all metals conduct electricity?
They have a sea of delocalised electrons that are able to move. (in a battery)
