Group 7 reactivity Flashcards
What is another name for group 7
the halogens
are the halogens reactive?
very - like group one
Why does the reactivity increase in the opposite way to group 1? (most reactive at top)
Group 7 are trying to gain one electron (reduction)
How many state changes are there in group 7?
two - gas to liquid then liquid to solid
Why are there state changes in group 7?
Tha atoms/molecules become larger which increases the intermolecular force and holds them together better.
What colour and state is fluorine?
gas
pale yellow
What colour and state is chlorine?
gas pale green
What colour and state is Bromine?
liquid
orange brown
What colour and state is iodine?
solid
purple/black
When will an element displace another?
if it is more reactive
name an example of displacement
Chlorine with potassium bromide
Chlorine + potassium bromide —> potassium chloride + bromine
what is the observation for chlorine displacing bromine?
The solution turns from colourless to a yellow orange
what is the observation for chlorine displacing iodine?
Colourless to a solution that is purple with black bits
what is the observation for the potassium and chlorine displacement?
no visible change. stays colourless.
