Metallic Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat?

A

The delocalised electrons are able to move through the structure. This also means energy can be transferred quickly through the material.

Q

What is metallic bonding in terms of electrostatic attractions?

A

Metals have a giant structure of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. The electrostatic attractions between the positive ions and the electrons is called metallic bonding.

Why are most metals malleable?

A

The layers of ions in a metal can slide over eachother.

Q

Why do group 1 elements react in a similar way with water?

A

Because they are all in the same group, the alkali metals.

Q

Why do group 1 elements become more reactive the further down the group in terms of electronic confiuration?

A

As you go down group one the outermost shell becomes further away from the nucleus. This means the attraction between the outermost electron and the nucleus becomes less. So therefore the outer electron is more easily lost.
