Chemical Tests Flashcards
How to test for hydrogen?
Hydrogen makes a squeaky pop with a lit splint
How to test for oxygen?
Oxygen will relight a glowing splint
How to test for carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide will turn limewater cloudy
How to test for ammonia?
Ammonia will turn damp litmus paper red to blue
How to test for chlorine?
Chlorine will bleach damp blue litmus paper turning it white
How to test for water?
When copper(II) sulfate crystals are bound to water they turn blue
How to test if a sample is pure?
Use the defined physical properties like boiling point and freezing point.
How do you carry out a flame test?
1) Clean a platinum wire loop by dipping it in some dilute HCL
2) Hold the loop in the flame and if it burns without any color you can dip it into the sample you want to test
What color will lithium be under a flame?
Red
What color will sodium be under a flame?
Yellow
What color will potassium be under a flame?
Lilac
What color will calcium be under a flame?
Orange - red
What color will copper be under a flame?
Blue - green
What color will the precipitate of copper be when in sodium hydroxide?
Blue
What color will the precipitate of iron(II) be when in sodium hydroxide?
Sludgy green
What color will the precipitate of iron(III) be when in sodium hydroxide?
Reddish brown
How do you test for ammonium ions(NH4)?
Add sodium hydroxide to a solution and ammonia will be given off
How do you test for chloride, bromide or iodide ions?
Add dilute nitric acid followed by silver nitrate solution
What color will the precipitate be of a chloride ions?
White
What color will the precipitate be of a bromide ions?
Cream
What color will the precipitate be of a iodide ions?
Yellow
How do you test for sulfate ions(SO4 2-)?
Add dilute HCL followed by barium chloride solution
What color will the precipitate be of a sulfate ion?
White
How do you test for carbonates?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the sample, if carbonates are present then carbon dioxide will be released
