Q

Properties of metals?

A
  • Can conduct heat and electricity.
  • Due to the delocalised electrons which move through the structure and carry charge.

Q

Melting and boiling points?

A

The strong attraction between the positive metal ions and delocalised electrons in the giant lattice need a lot of energy to be overcome.
- Therefore, metals are solids at room temperature.

Q

Malleability/ductility?

A
  • The layers can slide over eachother when a metal is bent, hammered etc.
  • Makes metals malleable and ductile.

Q

How can alloys fix the ions sliding over eachother in a metal?

A
  • An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals.
  • They are harder than pure soft metals.
  • Adding different sized atoms to the metal distorts the lattice structure, making it harder for the ions to slide over eachother.
