Metallic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is metallic bonding?
A
The attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.
2
Q
What do metals form?
A
Giant metallic structures, made of ions in regular layers.
3
Q
Properties of metals?
A
- Can conduct heat and electricity.
- Due to the delocalised electrons which move through the structure and carry charge.
4
Q
Melting and boiling points?
A
The strong attraction between the positive metal ions and delocalised electrons in the giant lattice need a lot of energy to be overcome.
- Therefore, metals are solids at room temperature.
5
Q
Malleability/ductility?
A
- The layers can slide over eachother when a metal is bent, hammered etc.
- Makes metals malleable and ductile.
6
Q
How can alloys fix the ions sliding over eachother in a metal?
A
- An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals.
- They are harder than pure soft metals.
- Adding different sized atoms to the metal distorts the lattice structure, making it harder for the ions to slide over eachother.
