Covalent bonding + molecules Flashcards
1
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
- A shared pair of electrons, between two non-metals.
2
Q
What do most covalently bonded atoms exist as?
A
Small covalent molecules.
3
Q
What is an intermolecular force?
A
- The covalent bond that holds the atoms together, is strong.
- However, there are weak forces between each molecule.
4
Q
Melting/boiling points?
A
- Small covalent bonds have low boling/melting points.
- Because not much energy is needed to overcome their weak intermolecular forces
- Therefore, they are gases/liquids at room temperature.
5
Q
What about large covalent molecules like polymers or oils?
In terms of boiling points
A
- Large molecules have more intermolecular forces
- So they have slightly higher melting and boiling points
6
Q
Do covalent molecules conduct energy?
A
- No, there are no delocalised electrons to carry charge.
7
Q
Can covalent compounds like water conduct electricity?
A
- No
- It is an excellent solvent, so ions can dissolve into it.
