gain of one (or more) electrons.

Metals always lose electrons, to form positive ions.

Non-metal ions?
A
Non-metals typically have lots of electrons on
their outer shell.
Therefore non-metals gain electrons (or share)
to form a full outer shell.
THEY FORM NEGATIVE IONS CALLED ANIONS
