Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What is metabolism
A
complement of the reactions that happen in the cell
2
Q
Catabolism
A
Breakdown of larger molecules into smaller ones: release energy exergonic
- removal of the alpha amino group in the form of ammonia-deamination
- conversion of ammonia into urea- urea cycle
- conversion of remaining carbon unit into intermediates to enter into the citric acid cycle
3
Q
Anabolism
A
synthesis of larger molecules from smaller ones: cost energy endergonic
4
Q
Catabolic pathways
A
- Hydrolysis in the stomach/small intestine
- Degradations in the cells to give acetyl CoA
- Oxidation in the citric acid cycle to give CO2
- Formation of ATP from ADP in the electron transport chain
5
Q
Transamination
A
the NH2 group of the amino acid is exchanged with the ketones group of a alpha-ketoglutarate forming a new alpha-keto acid and glutamate
Catalysed by aminotransferases- use coenzyme pyridoxal phosphate
6
Q
Ketogenic
A
converted into acetoacetate or acetyl CoA
7
Q
Glucogenic
A
converted into pyruvate or intermediate
