Metabolism Flashcards
How does energy transfer work in phosphates in ATP?
When the phosphate group is near two attracting proteins, the proteins are no longer attracted to each other but to the phosphate. The process of hydrolysing ATP to ADP releases energy for the protein to do something
Interconvertibility
How the cells can be re-used or recycled through breaking down or synthesising to make a completely different macronutrient
What are two jobs that vitamins can do?
Be used as a structural component (as a building block for tissue)
Used as coenzyme that binds to an enzyme to speed up the activity
How does triglycerides help protect the small intestine?
It helps building a tissue around the small intestine called Omentum
Is cholesterol an essential diet? Why?
On the surface, cholesterol is essential for steroid hormones, but cholesterol can also be made from acetyl-coA, so no not necessarily essential
How are fatty acids synthesised from the body?
Fatty acids can be made from glucose in the body
