What are WAFC?
World area forecast centres. A Met centre that provides real-time meteorological info for aviation.
What does SADIS stand for?
Satellite distribution (system). A worldwide satellite-based broadcast system dedicated to distributing aeronautical meteorological information in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation standards.
What is MWO?
Meteorological watch office.
What is ICAO annex 3?
Pilots need to be informed about meteorological conditions along the routes to be flown and at their destination aerodromes.
What is ICAO annex 11?
Specifications for operational flight information service (OFIS) broadcasts, including ATIS broadcasts. This includes SIGMET information, weather conditions at departure, destination and alternate aerodromes.
What 7 weather phenomena will the Met office issue aerodrome warnings for?
- Gales
- Strong wind warnings
- Squalls, hail or thunderstorms
- Snow
- Frost
- Fog
- Freezing precipitation
What is a special forecast?
A forecast from the Met office for any individual flight or aviation event with required notice.
What is a SIGMET?
Significant Met report
List 5 SIGMET phenomena?
- Thunderstorm
- Heavy hail
- Volcanic ash clouds
- Freezing rain
- Severe icing
What is a VOLMET?
A continuous Met transmission that loops every 30 mins. Includes METARs SPECIs plus occasional SIGMETs.
What is a SPECI?
A special report is issued whenever significant changes have occurred or are expected to occur to the published report or forecast.
What does ATIS stand for?
Automatic terminal information service, constantly transmits a voice recording of aerodrome status, current weather and information code.
What does SAMOS stand for?
Semi-automatic meteorological observing system.
What does ADIS stand for?
Automated data information system. Weather display for ATC.
