ATC equipment radio principles Flashcards
What are the 4 steps for a voice message being carried by radio waves?
- The sound wave is converted into an electrical signal.
- It is super imposed onto a radio frequency called a carrier wave.
- The carrier wave is transmitted by the radio.
- Receiving radio removes the carrier wave and converts it into a pressure wave that can be heard.
What are the 4 components of a transmitter?
- Microphone
- Modulator
- Radio frequency oscillator
- Transmitting antenna
What are the 5 components of a reciver?
- Receiving antenna
- Tuner
- Demodulator
- Amplifier
- Speaker
What frequency do oceanic flights use?
High frequency
What frequency do ATC and A/C commonly use?
Very high frequency
What is the frequency for radio communication between ATC and vehicles?
Ultra high frequency
What frequency do the military use?
Ultra high frequency
What are the 5 ways radio waves can be weakened?
- Reflected
- Attenuated
- Diffracted
- Absorbed
- Refracted
What is antenna shadoing?
When the a/c turns, the VHF antenna may be shadowed by other parts of the air frame.
What is SELCAL?
Selective calling radio system. Alerts a/c crew that a ground station wishes to communicate with them.
What is the communications panel used by ATC called?
Voice communication control system (VCCS)
What are ACARS?
Aircraft communication addressing and reporting system. A data link for the transmission of short messages.
What are the three types of messages sent by ACARS?
- ATC messages
- Aeronautical operational control
- Airline admin control
