Met 1 (Composition of the atmosphere) Flashcards
Define meteorology
The science dealing with the atmosphere and its phenomena including either and climate.
What is a barometer and barograph used for?
Used to measure gas/atmospheric pressure. Barograph transfers readings onto a graph.
Where should a thermometer be placed on an aerodrome?
1.5m agl and housed in a Stevenson screen.
What does an anemometer measure?
Wind speed
What does an celiometer measure?
Cloud base
What does an hygrometer measure?
Humidity
What does an Rain guage measure?
Precipitation
What does an Transmissometer measure?
Visibility
What are the 6 parts of the atmosphere (in order)?
- Troposphere
- Tropopause
- Stratosphere
- Ozone layer
- Mesosphere
- Ionosphere
List 4 features of the troposphere?
- Depth of 55,000ft at the equator of 25,000ft at the poles.
- Air temp decreases with height.
- Pressure decreases with height.
- Generates 99% of weather.
List 3 features of the stratosphere?
- Due to solar radiation being absorbed by the ozone temperature rises from -51 degrees to surface levels.
- Relatively stable.
- Little to no weather.
Is there any weather in the mesosphere?
No weather
List 2 features of the ionosphere?
- No weather
- Due to the solar radiation many atoms/molecules are ionised and these can affect radio communication.
What is the composition of the atmosphere?
- Nitrogen 78%
- Oxygen 21%
- Argon 1%
- Carbon dioxide 0.03%
- Water vapour 0-4%
What is the ISA?
International standard atmosphere, a standard model of the atmosphere.
