Met 8 (Met hazards) Flashcards
What are the 3 triggers of thunderstorms?
- Being unstable (Warm air low, Cold air high)
- High moisture content
- A trigger action such as a front or mountain pushing the air up.
What are 7 threats posed by thunderstorms?
- Severe turbulence
- Severe icing
- Hail
- Lighting strikes
- Interference with instruments
- Severe wind shear
- Low cloud base / reduced visibility
What are 7 potential Met hazards?
- Thunderstorms
- Temp and dew point
- Icing
- Pressure
- Wind and turbulence
- Precipitation
- Visibility
How can temperature and dew point pose a threat?
- High temperature creates low density
- If temperature = dew point it creates low visibility
- Very low temperatures lead to icing
What are 5 threats caused by icing?
- Poor aerodynamics
- Piston engine degradation
- Faulty instruments
- Windscreen freezing
- Landing gear being stuck
What is wind shear
Strong down draughts that hit the ground and spread out. If the extent is less than 2.5nm it is a ‘microburst’ if it is higher it is a ‘macroburst’.
What 4 hazards can be caused by wind?
- Turbulence
- Wind shear
- Gusts
- Mountain wave effect
What 3 hazards can be caused by precipitation?
- Heavy snow
- Heavy / prolonged rain
- Rain ice
What hazards are caused by poor visibility?
Poor viewing angles (slant visibility).
Define volcanic ash
Very small solid particles ejected from a volcano during eruption measuring 2mm or less. Called ‘fine ash’ if less than 0.0625mm.
What are 4 hazards cause by volcanic ash?
- Engine malfunction
- Long term engine damage
- External surface corrosion
- Can cause thunder and lighting due to charged particles
