Met 2 (Atmospheric process) Flashcards
What are the 5 atmospheric perimeters?
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Wind
- Humidity
- Density
What is Specific heat capacity (SHC)?
The amount of energy needed to raise a 1kg body 1 degree.
What are the 4 heat transfer mechanisms?
- Radiation
- Conduction
- Convection
- Advection
What 3 factors affect surface heating?
- The specific heat of the surface
- The reflectivity of the surface
- The conductivity of the surface
What is condensation?
Water changes from being a gas to a liquid as the air cools until it no longer has the heat required to hold the amount of water vapour present.
What is sublimation?
Water changes from ice to vapour without passing through the liquid stage.
What is Deposition?
Water changing from vapour to ice without passing through the liquid stage.
What is latent heat?
The heat absorbed or released without a change in temperature. For example when a substance changes state.
What is relative humidity?
Measures the degree of saturation, when air is saturated RH = 100%.
What is dew point?
The temperature to which the air must be cooled for it to become saturated.
What are the 4 stages of the water cycle?
- Evaporation
- Condensation
- Precipitation
- Collection
What is the adiabatic process?
A process in which heat is neither added, nor lost from a system.
What is ELR?
The environmental lapse rate is the rate at which air cools as it rises.
What are the values of the ELR, DSLR and SALR?
- ELR = 1.98 degrees / 1000ft
- DALR = 1.5 degrees / 1000ft
- SALR - 3 degrees / 1000ft
