Met 5 (Wind) Flashcards
What two measurements are used for wind?
- Wind direction (Degrees)
- Wind strength (Knots)
What term is used for wind going clockwise?
Veering
What term is used for wind going anti-clockwise?
Backing
What are the two causes of wind?
- Pressure gradient force
- Coriolis force
What is pressure gradient force?
The force that results when there is a difference in pressure. As the pressure tried to equalise it moves causing wind. The greater the pressure difference the stronger the wind.
What is Coriolis force?
Wind on the surface of the Earth moves forwards but due to the rotation of the Earth it appears to veer. Wind will always turn right in the Northern hemisphere.
What is Buys Ballot’s law?
If you stand with your back to the wind in the Northern hemisphere the lower pressure is always to your left.
Define gust
A temporary increase in mean wind speed lasting a few seconds.
