MEP.1.1.1.5 Autopilot Flashcards
What hand does the autopilot free you from?
The right hand
What is it useful for in Single-Pilot Operations?
Holding the wings level, thereby reducing the cockpit workload
What are the modes of the autopilot that are extremely helpful?
Heading hold and altitude hold
What’s a single autopilot?
Single axis (roll mode only)
Maintains wings level or maintain a heading, for it has no pitch attitude nor altitude hold functions
What’s a two-axis autopilot?
Roll and pitch modes
- Attitude and altitude hold
- Navigation modes
-Glideslope capability for the ILS
What does the pitch wheel do?
Trims the attitude for level flight, climb or descent.
What do more advanced autopilots have?
Airspeed hold
BASIC MODES OF OPERATION
What does the heading hold do?
Maintains set heading on the bug, on the heading indicator.
AP turns acft to follow the heading bug when it is repositioned. When it is aligned, it maintains the wings level
What does the ALT hold moe do?
AP maintains level-off at the altitude at which it is engaged.
A disadvantage is that it will hold the attitude even if there is not enough thrust to do so
What does the NAV mode do?
AP follows CDI var of the VOR and maintains selected track, outbound or inbound in a command sense
What does APPROACH mode do?
AP will intercept and maintain centreline of the localizer and will capture the glideslope when armed and within limits
What does the ATT hold mode do?
AP maintains selected attitude. It also automatically adjusts the electric elevator trim.
Pilot can fin tune the attitude with a small switch on the autopilot panel
How can the AP be disconnected?
AP has a manual select and deselect switches and a cut-out button on the control column
What modes are checked during pre-flight checks?
Basic modes and disconnect functions
How can the AP be manually overridden?
By force, it will disconnect in the process, this is checked before flight
