Anxiety Disorders
- cluster of mental disorders involving excessive anxiety
- combination of unjustifiable degree, duration, and source of anxiety
- most r transient and can be adaptive
- they become excessive and inappropriate
Anxiety Disorders- Potential Causes:
- observational learning
- catastrophic thinking
Generalized Anxiety Disorder- GAD
-high levels of anxiety over long period, difficult to control
- feel tense, tired, irritable
-trembling, palpitations, sweating, nausea, diarrhea, frequent urination
-more prevalent in women
Personality disorders can be manifested in two or more of the following
- cognition
- affectively
- interpersonal functioning
- impulse control
Psychotic Disorders
- odd and false belief symptoms
- loss of contact with reality
- hallucinations/delusions
- inappropriate or flat affect
- disturbance in thinking
- social withdrawal
- bizarre behavior, disorganized spech
Schizophrenia and Nervous System
-adolescents, too much synaptic pruning occurs, fewer connections between neurons, leads to smaller and less powerful prefrontal cortex
- low activity in frontal lobes
-reduced volume in hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, front grey matter
Schizophrenia Positive symptoms (involve presence of maladaptive behavior)
- hallucinations
- delusions
- thought disturbances
- grossly disorganized behavior
- inappropriate affect
Schizophrenia Negative symptoms (absent or flat emotional reactions lack of speech and motivation)
-loss or deficiency in normal thoughts and behaviors
-flat affect
- poorest outcomes
