Repeated episodes of binge eating followed by excessive exercise, purging, fasting, diuretic/laxative use Self induced vomitting Signs of depression Difficulties with relationships Impaired self concept Impulsive stealing Chemical abuse

Normal to slightly low weight Tooth enamel erosion,caries Gastric dilation Peripheral edema Electrolyte disturbances Scars on hands (Russell's sign) Cardiac abnormalities/failure

Do not meet criteria for anorexia or bulimia
Very distorted perception of self image & weight
Characteristics of binge eating disorder
Repeated episodes of binge eating followed by emotional distress
Do not follow with compulsive activities
Underlying psychological impairments of eating disorders
Low self esteem
Self doubts, doubt worth as a person
Very judgmental of selves
Thoughts/ideas about weight/body image/control are the focus & over valued
Conflicts-sexual roles, other developmental factors
Females view self as ineffectual, passive and unassertive, efforts to assert themselves
Learned behavior- thinness elicits positive rewards
