Approaches of defining normality

Sociocultural approach
- behaviour that is acceptable in a certain culture or society
Historical approach
- behaviour that is normal in a certain era of time
Situational approach
- within a culture, behaviour which may be considered normal in one situation may not be normal in another
Medical approach
- abnormal behaviour that is defined to have a biological cause and can be diagnosed and treated
Functional approach
- behaviour that is viewed normal if the person can function effectively in society
Statistical approach
Behaviour that is considered normal in a large group of people, answer is usually averaged.
Comparing physical health to mental Health
Physical is overt
Mental is covert
Types of mental illnesses
Psychotic illness
- psychosis is an condition that affects a persons thinking, feeling and behaviour, it causes the person to lose touch with reality
Eg. Skitzophrenia
Non-psychotic illness
- common experiences
Eg. Phobias, anxiety, stress
What is a stigma
Stigma is a negative label given to a group of people, usually stereotyped, it can result to prejudice and discrimination. It’s a mark of disgrace
Treatments of mental illness
- CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)
- Support groups
- medication
- psychiatric therapy

A persons condition in regards to their psychological and emotion wellbeing
