Define race
Race is a biologically based characteristic that a group of people share
Define culture
Culture is the (B-BAT) behaviour, belief, attitude and tradition a group of people share that is passed on from generations
What is a stereotype
HINT: BELIEF
A stereotype is a belief of a certain image or idea of a particular group of people
What is prejudice
HINT: ATTITUDE
A prejudgment, usually unjustifiable and negative attitude towards a groups of people
What is discrimination?
HINT: BEHAVIOUR
Unjust behaviour towards of a certain group of people
Causes of prejudice

- people get what they deserve.
- haves and have nots

Social influence
- influences from family and friends
- if a child believes the parent holds prejudice views they too will likely
Social categorisation
- ‘us’ and ‘them’
- categorising people into groups
- triggers ingroup favouritism and outgroup rejection
Intergroup competition
- in times of economic hoardings prejudice can arise against groups that are seen as ‘threats’
Ways to reduce prejudice

Intergroup contact
For there to be a reduction in prejudice there needs to be direct contact between groups under certain conditions:
- Sustained contact
Spending time with someone makes you less likely to hold prejudice views against them - super-ordinate goals
Two groups are dependent on each other as they share similar goals,and to reach that goal they need to work together - equality
Both groups are treated equally - mutual interdependence
Two groups are dependent on each other, eg. They may need something from each other
Cognitive intervention -
Making people think about what it is like to have prejudice views against them, and thinking from other people’s perspectives
What is an individualistic society

What is a collectivist society?

Describe the differences between individualistic and collectivist groups?

Individualistic groups are independent and identify form their own abilities.
They see their life task to discover and express their individuality.
The only things that matter in their lives are themselves and their achievements.
When faced with problems they change reality.
Collectivist groups are interdependent and identify from belonging.
Their takes into life is to fit-in and maintain relationships. What matters in their life is the group goals, social responsibilities and relationships.
Their way of coping is adapting to reality.
