What is lochia?
Blood, mucus, endometrial lining
How long is lochia?
Up to 6 weeks
Appearance of lochia
Dark red —> Brown —> lighter
Should not be used in lochia management:
Tampons (can cause infection)
What exacerbates lochia?
Breastfeeding increases the contractions of uterus
How quickly does menstruation return (if no breastfeeding)?
After 3 weeks
When is or fertile again postpartum (if no breastfeeding)?
21 days
Lactational amenorrhoea as contraception, how effective?
98% effective if:
1) exclusively breastfeeding
2) pt is completely amenorrhoeic
2 systemic hormonal contraceptives safe in breastfeeding?
