Inflammation of the breast with/without infection
Preventable cause of mastitis (in breastfeeding)
- Obstruction and blockage in ducts
prevented with regular milk expression
Infective cause of mastitis
Staph aureus
Management of simple mastitis
1) Conservative (Simple anagesia, heat packs, hot shower)
2) Breast massage, and continue to express milk
Suspect infective causes of mastitis
- Conservative management ineffective
- Fever
Abx for mastitis
Flucloxacillin
Abx for mastitis - penicillin allergic
Erythromycin
How to take culture for mastitis
Breast milk sent to the lab

What causes candida of the nipple

Recurrent mastitis (cracks skin and bacteria enters the breast)

Yes - to bebo’s mouth /or nappy rash
4 symptoms of candida infection of the nipple
1) Bilateral sore nipples
2) Cracked skin of nipple
3) Breast tenderness
4) Nipple itching
