menstrual cycle Flashcards
what days are the follicular phase
days 1-14
what is the follicular phase
Start 1rst day of menstruation until ovulation.
Development of a follicle capable of undergoing ovulation.
how many days is the 1 earl phase
day 1-6
what happens to the fsh levels in 1 early phase
FSH stimulates 15-20 follicles to develop and stimulate follicular secretion of oestradiol.
what days are the 2 late follicular phase
7-14
what happends during the 2 late follicular phase
As oestradiol levels increase, FSH secretion decreases. One follicle evolves into the dominant follicle (Graafian follicle) destined for ovulation. ). The dominant follicle continues to synthesise estradiol, essential for its complete maturation.
what days are the luteal phase
14-28
what are the luteal phase
The zona granulosa and surrounding theca cells develop into the corpus luteum, which in turn becomes atretic (degenerates) after 14 days. After several months, the corpus luteum has fully devolved into the corpus albicans.
what is the moa of Progestogen (levonogestrel…)
inhibit the release of LH and prevent ovulation and makes the cervical mucus less suitable for sperm.
what is the moa of Oestrogen (ethinylestradiol, mestranol)
inhibits the release of FSH and prevents development of follicles. Suppress ovulation in about 98% cycle.
contraindications of contraceptives
dvt
breast cancer
smoking
CAD
LIVER DISEASE
WHAT ARE EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES
Usually the same hormones as in regular contraceptives but at higher doses, often progestin only EC
