Primary dysmenorrhea

PDM duration
48-72 hours (before or at onset of menses

increased exercise – Loose clothing – Rubbing or massaging – Smoking cessation heating pads
Pharmocologic treatment
– ASA
– APAP
–IBU
– Naproxen (at max frequency)
ASA
may increase flow

not as effective as NSAID
no PGA activity

inhibit PGA production and activity
TAKE ON SCHEDULE, NOT PRN

pain not associated with menstration
PMS
sx absent during 1st week after menses
serotonin decreased in pms women
PMDD
prementrual dysphoric disorder, advanced form of PMS
PMS non Pharmacologic treatment.
increase carb intake
aerobic exercise
PMS treatment
B6 (breast pain) pamabrom (weak diuretic)
E (Breast Pain)
calcium (emotional behavioral probs)
Mg (irritability) diuretics for fluid retention (NH4Cl 3g/day NTE 6 days)
vaginal douching
27% do it, but it’s not safe or necessary
