Define menopause and how is it diagnosed?
The last menstrual period (LMP) - diagnosed after 1 year amenorrhoea
What is the average age of menopause?
52 years
A serum FSH level above what level is diagnosed as ovarian failure (menopause)?
> 30 IU/l on two separate occaisons
How long on average do climacteric symptoms last?
1-5 years
How does menopause cause cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease long term.
Oestrogen increases HDL and reduces LDL and so reduces cholesterol deposition and fat distribution
Who can be give oestrogen only HRT?
Only those who have had a TOTAL hysterectomy.
Those with a uterus need progesterone for endometrial protection
When should continuous combined HRT be started?
Over 54yrs or LMP >1yr
When should sequential HRT be started?
