What should a woman who has missed two COC pills with less than 7 days left in the pack do?
Take the pill she has most recently missed now. Consider EC if had UPSI in last 7 days. Use extra contraception for the next 7 days. Start next pack of pills right away without taking break.
Can the COC pill be taken after giving birth.
If the mother is breastfeeding, should be avoided for 6 months following birth.
Why might someone be against using the IUS device as contraception?
It doesn’t necessarily stop contraception, stops implantation - some may not be comfortable with this
What is the mode of action for the IUD contraceptive method?
Copper prevents sperm and ova joining. Also causes inflammatory reaction in the endometrium preventing implantation.
Name the drug given in the first stage of a medical TOP
Oral mifepristone (200mg)
What effect does the drug used in the first stage of a medical TOP have?
Oral mifepristone is an anti-progesterone that induces uterine contractility - mimicking labour and dilating the cervix
Which drug is given in the second stage of a medical TOP?
A vaginal or oral prostaglandin e.g. misoprostol
What effect does the drug used in the second stage of a medical TOP have?
Softens the neck of the uterus and opens the cervix
How far apart are the two stages of a medical TOP carried out?
24-48 hours
In a late/mid-trimester medical TOP how often is prostaglandin given?
Repeated doses 3 hourly (maximum 5 a day)
At what stage of pregnancy should the patient be at in order to carry out the second part at home?
If they are less than 9 wks
With a medical TOP what happens to the bleeding risk as the gestation increases?
Bleeding risk increases
