What is a meninges?
A
Connective tissue coverings of the CNS.
- Protect the CNS
- Contain CSF between the inner two layers
- Create spaces

What is Dura mater?
A
“Tough mother”
- Two layers usually stuck together, but separated at times = dural/venous sinuses
- Special extensions that separate the two cerebral hemispheres from each other and the cerebellum from the cerebrum

What is the Arachnoid?
A
-arachnoid trabeculae = filaments in the subarachnoid space

What is the Pia Mater?
A
“little mother”
-Innermost layer - intimate with the CNS

What is the epidural space?
A
Between bone and dura mater in the spinal region (a “potential” space in the skull)
-Contains blood vessels and fat in the spinal region only

What is the subdural space?
A
Space between dura mater and arachnoid

What is subarachnoid space?
A
Space between arachnoid and pia mater
-Filled with CSF
