Intro Flashcards
What is Neuroscience?
Study of the development, chemistry, structure, function and pathology of the nervous system.
What is the function of the nervous system?
Transmission of information
Nervous System - Two geographical subdivisions
CNS
PNS
Central Nervous System contains:
- Brain/cerebrum
- Brainstem, cerebellum
- Spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous Sytem contains:
- Spinal and peripheral nerves
- Cranial nerves
- Dorsal and ventral roots
Nervous System - Two functional subdivisions
- Motor
- Sensory
Nervous System - Motor does:
- Voluntary: skeletal muscle
- Automatic: Smooth and cardiac muscle
Nervous System - Sensory does:
- Somato-sensory: skin, muscle, tendon, joint (touch, pain, temp, proprioception
- Viscero-sensory: Visceral organs, blood vessels
- Special Sensory: Vision, hearing, taste, smell, equilibrium (sensations)
Columns, peduncles and capsules contain what?
More than one tract or lemniscus or fasciculus
A peduncle carries what?
- The white matter tracts from one area of the brain to/from the brainstem.
- Also, connects the brainstem to either the cerebellum or the cerebrum.
Regions of Nervous System are?
Peripheral Region
Spinal Region
What is the peripheral region?
All parts of the nervous system not within the vertebral column or skull.
What is the spinal region?
All parts of the nervous system within the vertebral column.
-Contains both CNS and PNS structures.
What is the brainstem?
- Connects the cerebrum (brain) and spinal cord.
- Contains fibers tracts carrying motor and sensory information.
- Contains the cranial nerve nuclei
What are the structures of the brainstem?
- Midbrain
- Pons
- Medulla oblongata
