The process of retaining information overtime
Who was the MSM proposed by
Atkinson and Shriffin
What three stores does the MSM consists of
sensory register
STM
LTM
- Info flows in a linear way
The two stores of the sensory register
- Echoic : sound or auditory info and encoded acoustically
- Iconic : visual info and is encoded visually
Evidence for MSM - Glanzer and Cunitz
Found when ppts were allowed to immediately recall a list of one syllable words they were asked to remember, they could only remember words at the beginning and the end of the lists, but not words in the middle (known as the primary - recency effect)
- Supports MSM as the words at the beginning are rehearsed and placed in LTM but words in the middle are quickly displaced, words at the end are still in STM
Capacity of sensory register
very large
What is between the sensory register and STM
Attention
Duration for sensory register
- Echoic : 3 seconds
- Iconic : 1/2 second
Research for duration of sensory register - Treisman
Presented identical info to both ears through headphones but with a slight delay. At 2 secs or less, ppts could state that the messages were identical
The WMM
after the MSM, research questioned existence of a single STM store and it was far too complex and wasn’t passive instead it was an active
Components of the WMM
- central executive
- phonological loop
- visuo spatial sketchpad
- episodic buffer
Central executive
Phonological loop
Stores speech based sounds and verbal info seen visually
- phonological store :stores most recent info heard
- articulatory process: hold the info for longer
