Q

What does you sensory memory retain

A

sensory memories retains all the visual and auditory input received for a few seconds
only selected images and sounds are encoded into short term memory

7
Q

Comment on the capacity of the short term memory

A

it holds seven items at any one time, for 30 seconds
if more items go into the STM they displace the previous ones
thereafter items are transferred to long term memory or lost by displacement or decay
retrieval from STM is very accurate

Q

What is the serial position egffect

A

recall is best for the first few and last few items form a sense of facts. Middle items are not remembered well

10
Q

Why are the first few items remembered well

A

there has been time to process the information by rehearsal

What is decay

A

the breakdown of a fragile memory pathway formed when a group of neurons briefly become activated

16
Q

What is information transferred from STM ro LTM via

A

organisation
rehearsal
elaboration

17
Q

What is organisation

A

related information is grouped together

18
Q

What is rehearsal

A

repeating information to yourself several times

19
Q

What is elaboration

A

additional information is given

20
Q

What is an example of shallow encoding

21
Q

What is retrieval

A

taking information out of LTM

22
Q

What is retrieval aided by the use of

A

contextual cues

23
Q

What is contextual cues

A

things that serve as a reminder to the time/occasion when the information was originally encoded

24
Q

What is the capacity of STM called

A

memory span

25
Q

Give an example of a deeper form of encoding

A

organisation and elaboration are regarded as a deeper form of encoding which leads to improved information retention
